Dear friends,

I am writing to invite you to the opening of

Misbaha  |  The Prayer Beads  | مسبحة

at Counihan Gallery, Brunswick on Saturday May 10th from 2pm till 5pm.

“How far can someone go in concealing their true self to meet social expectations?”

In Misbaha, queer Lebanese artist Ayman Kaake reflects his identity and experience in a patriarchal Middle Eastern environment. He highlights the societal pressures and constraints faced by queer individuals, using prayer beads as a symbol of the concealment of one's true identity and the expectations to conform to societal norms regarding marriage, children, and maintaining family names.

Misbaha will feature a new immersive installation including sculpture, moving images, and sound. The exhibition will be accompanied by community-focused public programs on June 14th, including a stitching workshop led by Safa El Samad, a Melbourne-based emerging multidisciplinary artist and fashion designer. The workshop will also include a talk on the history of stitching in the MENA region by Ayman Kaake.

Hope to see you there.
With warmth,
Ayman
